10th Engineer Battalion (United States)

The 10th Engineer Battalion is a unit of the United States Army that deploys to designated contingency areas and conducts combat and/or stability operations in support of a brigade combat team. It is a divisional mechanized combat engineer unit, composed of four line companies and a headquarters company. As of 17 January 2015, the battalion exists as the 10th Brigade Engineer Battalion (10th BEB) at Fort Stewart, GA under the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.

The 10th Engineer Battalion is a vital unit of the United States Army, tasked with deploying to designated contingency areas to conduct combat and stability operations in support of a brigade combat team. As of 17 January 2015, the battalion operates as the 10th Brigade Engineer Battalion (10th BEB) at Fort Stewart, GA, under the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.

Unit Insignia

History

The battalion’s lineage dates back to 31 December 1861, when it was organized in Washington, D.C., as a provisional engineer battalion. It was later constituted as the Battalion of Engineers on 28 July 1866.

Lineage

The battalion underwent several expansions and redesignations:

  • Expanded on 14 March – 7 June 1901 to create the 1st and 2nd Battalions of Engineers.
  • Redesignated on 1 July 1916 as the 1st Regiment of Engineers.
  • Inactivated on 15 March 2004 at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
  • Reactived on 17 January 2015 as part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.

Campaign Participation and Honors

The 10th Engineer Battalion has participated in numerous campaigns throughout its history:

  • Civil War: Peninsula, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Appomattox.
  • World War I: Somme Defensive, Aisne-Marne, and Meuse-Argonne.
  • World War II: Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily (with arrowhead), and Central Europe.
  • Korean War: CCF Intervention, First UN Counteroffensive, and Third Korean Winter.
  • War on Terrorism: Campaigns to be determined.

Decorations

The battalion has received numerous awards and decorations, including:

  • Presidential Unit Citation (Army) with streamers for COLMAR and IRAQ 2003.
  • Meritorious Unit Commendation (Army) for KOREA 1950–1951.
  • French Croix de Guerre with Palm (World War I and World War II).
  • Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.

Fallen Soldiers

The battalion remembers its fallen soldiers from multiple conflicts, including:

  • World War II: CPT Stanley E. Larson, Sgt. Glenn W. Scott, and many others.
  • Korean War: PV2 John A. Aimer, SFC Ellis L. Aldridge, and numerous others.

The battalion has been led by several commanders throughout its history:
