Another approach to synthesizing 1-hexanol involves the hydroformylation of 1-pentene, followed by the hydrogenation of the resulting aldehydes. This method is widely used in the industry to produce a mixture of isomeric C6-alcohols, which serve as precursors for plasticizers.
Additionally, while it is theoretically possible to convert 1-hexene to 1-hexanol through hydroboration (using diborane in tetrahydrofuran followed by treatment with hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide), this laboratory synthesis is not commercially viable due to the affordable availability of 1-hexanol derived from ethylene.

Furthermore, it plays a role in alarm pheromones emitted by the Koschevnikov gland of honey bees.
