101st Rescue Squadron Overview
The 101st Rescue Squadron (101 RQS) serves as a vital unit within the New York Air National Guard, specifically under the 106th Rescue Wing, and is located at the Francis S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base in Westhampton Beach, New York. This squadron is equipped to carry out combat search and rescue operations using advanced aircraft including the Sikorsky HH-60G Pave Hawk and the HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopters.
Unit History
Founded in 2004 by the Air Force Special Operations Command, the creation of the 101 RQS was part of a strategic reorganization aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of Air National Guard rescue wings. This initiative led to the formation of dedicated squadrons responsible for fixed-wing, helicopter, and pararescue operations within the 106th Rescue Wing. The unit later transitioned under the Air Combat Command.
Operational Role
The 101st Rescue Squadron plays an essential role in the 106th Operations Group, operating alongside the Lockheed HC-130J Combat King II aircraft from the 102nd Rescue Squadron. The squadron is pivotal in transporting pararescue personnel from the 103rd RQS during their missions, ensuring a cohesive and efficient rescue operation capability.
