The 117th Ohio Infantry Regiment
The 117th Ohio Infantry Regiment, also known as the 117th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (or 117th OVI), served valiantly as an infantry unit in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
Service Overview
Formed in Portsmouth, Ohio, the regiment was mustered in on September 15, 1862, for a three-year service commitment under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Chauncey G. Hawley. Initially, the 117th Ohio Infantry was attached to the District of Eastern Kentucky, part of the Department of the Ohio.
The regiment’s existence came to an end when it was reorganized and designated as the 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery on May 2, 1863.
Detailed Service
The regiment was ordered to Kentucky on October 2, 1862, and established camp at Ashland, Kentucky, where they remained until January 1863. In January, they relocated to Paintsville, Kentucky, followed by a move to Covington, Kentucky via Peach Orchard, Louisa, and Catlettsburg in February 1863. The unit conducted their duties at Covington until May of that year.
