The 1907 Halifax By-Election
The 1907 Halifax by-election was a parliamentary by-election that took place on 6 March 1907 for the House of Commons constituency of Halifax in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
Vacancy
According to the provisions of the Succession to the Crown Act 1707 and several subsequent Acts, Members of Parliament (MPs) appointed to certain ministerial and legal offices were required to seek re-election. The vacancy in Halifax arose due to the appointment of the sitting Liberal MP, John Henry Whitley, as a Junior Lord of the Treasury, which is the formal title for the government’s junior whips in Parliament.
Candidates
Whitley, who had held the seat since 1900, contested the election again under the Liberal banner. At that time, Halifax was a constituency returning two members, and there was a history of both Liberal Unionist and Labour Party MPs being elected there. However, the Unionist members convened on 2 March to deliberate on whether to run a candidate, deciding to do so only if Labour opted to contest the election. Later that day, Labour announced they would not challenge Whitley, and with no other nominations, Whitley was therefore returned unopposed on 6 March 1907.
The Result
- Candidate: John Henry Whitley
- Party: Liberal
- Status: Returned unopposed
- Date: 6 March 1907
