Cops probe ‘murder-suicide’ after Brit couple Ben and Claire Anderson found dead at home after moving to New Zealand

Investigation into Tragic Deaths of British Couple in New Zealand

New Zealand police are currently investigating the tragic deaths of a British couple, Claire and Ben Anderson, who were found at their home in the affluent suburb of Roseneath, Wellington, in what is being treated as a suspected murder-suicide.

Discovery of the Bodies

On Monday night, police were called to conduct a welfare check after a concerned family member reached out about the couple’s well-being. Officers forced entry into the couple’s rented property on Palliser Road around 10:25 PM and found their bodies inside. Authorities have confirmed that they are not searching for any additional suspects in connection with this incident.

Community Response

Detective Inspector Haley Ryan stated, “Police will continue to have a presence in the area as we work to understand the reasoning behind this tragic incident.” She urged local residents to provide any information or surveillance footage that could assist in the investigation. The police are particularly interested in footage from residential CCTV systems capturing traffic movements in the Roseneath area.

A Fresh Start in New Zealand

Claire and Ben Anderson, both believed to be in their 30s or 40s, had recently relocated to New Zealand from London, seeking a new beginning. Neighbors described them as warm and adventurous individuals who were excited about their new life in Wellington. Emma Prestidge, a neighbor, noted that the couple had packed up their lives in London and were looking forward to establishing themselves in New Zealand.

Claire, a former teacher, had been oscillating between New Zealand and the UK before settling in Wellington in December. Meanwhile, Ben had been working as a principal research scientist at the Building Research Association of New Zealand (Branz) since January 2024, having previously held roles at the University of Southampton and the University of Otago.

Tributes from Neighbors and Landlord

Neighbors expressed their shock and sadness over the couple’s deaths. Paul Prestidge, another neighbor, described them as “very friendly people” who would often host dinner parties. Their landlord paid tribute, stating, “He was a clever, caring, charming man. She was vibrant, kind, intelligent, and both of them made friends wherever they went.”

The couple reportedly had adult children in New Zealand and were contemplating a move to Otago to be closer to them. Both were described as incredible parents and community members who lived life to the fullest.

Police Investigation Continues

New Zealand police have completed post-mortem examinations and will refer the case to the coroner. Wellington District Commander Corrie Parnell confirmed that the police are in contact with the couple’s family and are providing them with the necessary support during this difficult time. The family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss.

In light of this tragic incident, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has stated that they have not been approached for consular assistance but are prepared to support British nationals abroad 24/7.

Mental Health Awareness

This incident underscores the critical need for mental health awareness. Every 90 minutes in the UK, a life is lost to suicide, making it a leading cause of death among individuals under 35. It is essential to break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage open conversations about emotional well-being.

If you, or anyone you know, needs help dealing with mental health issues, organizations such as Samaritans offer support and guidance.
