Historic Empress Theatre in Fort Macleod to undergo significant restoration

Empress Theatre Undergoes Major Renovation

The historic Empress Theatre in Fort Macleod, Alberta, is set to close for renovations starting May 1, 2025, marking a significant moment in its storied 113-year history.

A Jewel of Main Street

The Empress Theatre, recognized by fans of Ghostbusters for its appearance in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, has been a beloved venue in the small southern Alberta town since it opened in 1912. The theatre has witnessed a century of entertainment, serving as a backdrop for numerous film and television productions, and it has cultivated a strong sense of community among its patrons.

Restoration Plans and Funding

As the theatre prepares for its upcoming renovations, the Empress Theatre Society has launched a fundraising campaign with a target of $250,000. The renovations are not merely cosmetic; they represent a vital restoration effort to preserve the building’s historic charm while enhancing the experience for visitors.

“It’s been a long time coming. Anyone who has been a patron of the theatre is well aware of the need,” said Denise Joel, president of the Empress Theatre Society. The total cost of the renovations is estimated at over $200,000, with support from the Town of Fort Macleod and the Government of Alberta contributing significantly to the funding.

Community Involvement

The Empress Theatre Society has initiated the “S.O.S.” campaign, which stands for Save Our Seat. This initiative encourages community members to donate, with options to sponsor a seat for $500, which includes a commemorative plaque recognition. “Any gift is appreciated,” Joel added, emphasizing the importance of community support in reaching their fundraising goal.

Enhancements and Accessibility

The planned renovations will bring various improvements, including new seating, enhanced wheelchair access, expanded washroom facilities, and updated flooring. Joel noted, “The need is getting to be desperate,” referring to the worn-out condition of the current seating. The upgrades aim to provide a “cushy, squeak-free, ultra-comfy experience” for patrons.

Future Events and Reopening

While the renovations are underway, programming will temporarily shift to Trinity United Church. The Empress Theatre is expected to reopen later in the fall, with exciting plans for a grand reopening event, although details remain under wraps for now.

The theatre’s rich history is not limited to its architectural significance; every artist who has performed there has left their mark by signing the basement walls, a testament to the countless memories created within its walls.

A Lasting Legacy

As the Empress Theatre prepares for this much-needed restoration, the community’s nostalgia and support promise to play a crucial role in preserving the legacy of this cherished venue. “It’s just a well-loved building. Everybody has memories of going there and watching movies and live shows,” Orr emphasized, highlighting the importance of keeping the theatre alive for future generations.

Donations for the restoration can be made online at MacLeodEmpress.com, in person at the theatre’s Box Office, or by mail. The Empress Theatre Society is hopeful that with community support, they will successfully achieve their fundraising goals and continue to provide entertainment for years to come.
